Carlton House Writing Table in Mahogany & Yew Wood

Writing Table Close up of Leather top and inlays

The Carlton House Writing Table takes its name from the 'Prince of Wales', later George IV, Pall Mall residence which was given to him on his coming of age in 1783.

Said to have been ordered by the Prince as a reward for one of his entourage, the desk is characterised by the U shaped form of the upper drawers.

Designs for this type of desk appear in both George Hepplewhite's Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Guide and Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book.
